The appearance of three bald eagles at the cutting of the Capitol Christmas Tree awed and amazed those that witnessed the magnificent birds circling over the site of the celebration.

Several Forest Service employees pointed them out and wondered at the significance of them appearing right at that time.
Many were also inspired by the prayer offered by Chairman Lupe of the White Mountain Apache Tribe and wanted to know what he thought the meaning of the eagles was.
In a phone interview with The Independent, Lupe said the eagles are the only bird that flies into space and carries the messages of our prayers. They also represent our beliefs and are the most highly respected of all winged birds in the Apache culture, as well as many other native tribes.
As for being omens, several eagles flying together symbolize peace. Sailors consider it a good omen if an eagle lands on a ship's mast. Other beliefs about eagles say that they are sacred messengers and the feathers help in healing.
It's interesting that during Chairman Lupe's talk at the tree cutting, he said a blessing and prayer for the tree and said it was "the tree of life."
"Let all nations and peoples who stand before the tree as it shines its light of hope, be blessed with peace and goodwill to all mankind."
At the time of his speech, Lupe was unaware that the eagles were circling overhead. He was excited to learn of their presence and said that it is a very good omen.
Members of the tribe, including Lupe and the Crown Dancers, will be present at the tree lighting in Washington D.C.
