Ohio, groups to create composting program at stores

Nov. 4

The state of Ohio and state trade organizations are working on a program to establish a composting program at grocery stores.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, Ohio Grocers Association and the Ohio Grocers Foundation announced the project this week.

The partnership is developing a Composting and Diversion Guide to assist Ohio grocers plan organic composting efforts.

The Kroger Company was one of the first grocers to start a composting pilot program. To date, 44 stores are participating and 2,334 tons of organics have been diverted from landfills.

Composting programs can lead to reduced solid waste disposal costs for grocers in addition to diverting material from landfills.
