Iowa unveils photobioreactor to reduce CO2 emissions

Oct. 13

A photobioreactor, funded in part by state grants, is being unveiled in Iowa where an algae harvesting system was installed in an ethanol plant in an effort to reduce CO2 emissions.

Ethanol plant owner Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. and BioProcessAlgae announced the completion of the Phase I photobioreactor pilot project this week.

Iowa Governor Chet Culver is scheduled to attend the technology unveiling. The State of Iowa, through its Iowa Power Fund, provided a grant of $2.1 million for research and development.

BioProcessAlgae has completed the installation of the first phase of the multi-phase pilot project and algae production has commenced at the plant. The system is using the ethanol plant’s warm water, waste heat and CO2 for its algae growth and production.

The company´s research team will begin to collect data from the algae pilot project over the next 120 days to determine the scalability and functionality for future commercial deployment.
