A bill to tighten regulations for organic fertilizer in
California is under consideration by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
According to The Sacramento Bee, Assembly Bill 856, authored by
Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, D-Salinas, targets problems in the
organic fertilizer sector.
The bill increases penalties for violations of organic
fertilizer standards, expands state regulators' inspection
authority and raises as much as $416,000 annually for
enforcement through new fees on fertilizer makers, according to
the newspaper.
The state Department of Food and Agriculture sponsored AB 856.
The bill was also supported by organic farming and certification
groups as well as the fertilizer industry, according to the Bee.
Earlier this year several California companies were found to be
selling tainted organic fertilizer for years to companies like
Earthbound Farm, and in February U.S. Department of Agriculture
set an Oct. 1 deadline for organic fertilizer manufacturers to
have any liquid fertilizer with more than 3% nitrogen
third-party reviewed.
