Sierra Club, students campaign to kick coal of campuses

Sept. 17

The Sierra Club and Sierra Student Coalition are launching a nationwide campaign to kick coal off college campuses.

The campaign organizers are calling for an end to coal burning at several of the dozens of campuses that have on-site coal plants. The groups aim to wean all campuses off of coal-generated electricity, replacing it with clean energy options.

ôWe’re focusing on campuses because universities should be leaders in technological innovation and sustainability, creating models for green society,ö said Bruce Nilles, director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.

Sixty campuses operate coal plants on campus, contributing to global warming emissions, according to the Sierra Club.

In connection with the campaign, the Sierra Club released a report titled Breaking Coal’s Grip on Our Future: Moving Campuses Beyond Coal. It´s available online at www.sierraclub.org/coal/campus.
