Radioactive waste to remain at former nuclear plant site

Aug. 24

After transfer of an operation license of a nuclear facility is complete, radioactive waste will remain on the site of the former Zion nuclear energy plant in Lake County, Ill., with approval by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The nuclear energy plant, formerly operated by Exelon Nuclear, has not been in operation since 1997. The plantīs operation license is being transferred from Exelon to nuclear services company EnergySolutions Inc. of Salt Lake City for accelerated decommissioning; the NRC approved the transfer in 2008, and the companies said they expect the transaction to be complete Sept. 1.

EnergySolutions will process and dispose of all Zion low-level radioactive waste at its Clive, Utah facility, and will place the spent nuclear fuel in NRC-approved dry cask storage containers on the Zion site.

Exelon said the project will cost $1 billion and last 10 years. Exelon will continue to own the property and the nuclear waste.
