Organizations join to dispose of thermostats with mercury

Dec. 1 -- Two organizations are teaming up to properly dispose of old mercury-containing thermostats.

The Thermostat Recycling Corp. and Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International have formed a partnership to expand a national recycling program. The new agreement formalizes a long-standing working relationship between the two organizations.

TRC, formed by companies that sold mercury-containing thermostats in the U.S., pays for transporting and recycling the thermostats collected by HARDI member companies. In addition to the collection and recycling, TRC also is providing marketing materials to help promote responsible management of thermostats containing hazardous material.

"TRC is thrilled to formalize its partnership with HARDI," said TRC Executive Director Mark Tibbetts. "The active support of HVACR wholesale distributors is critical to the success of TRC."
