BP says it recovered 24,955 barrels oil from Macondo well July 4

BP recovered a total of 24,955 barrels of oil and around 56,900 Mcf of gas from the leaking Macondo well on July 4, the company said Monday.

Of the total, 16,920 barrels of oil was collected, and the remaining 8,035 barrels of oil and all of the gas was flared, BP said.

BP is currently recovering oil and gas from Macondo using two separate containment devices, linked to separate vessels on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico.

A third containment device based on a floating riser, called the Helix Producer, is expected to begin operations by the end of this week, boosting the proportion of oil BP can capture from the leaking wellhead.

To date, the two operational systems have recovered a total of around 610,410 barrels of oil, BP said, while an additional 22,000 barrels was recovered using an earlier attempt to siphon oil directly from the leaking wellhead.

The Macondo well is currently leaking at an estimated rate of 35,000-60,000 b/d of oil, and is already rated as the biggest maritime oil spill in US history.

BP said earlier Monday it had so far spent around $3.12 billion on its response to the spill.
