On the eve of Arizona's new immigration law taking effect- a U-S district judge blocks key parts of the state's controversial legislation.

Just a day before Arizona's controversial immigration law goes into effect, a U.S. district judge has issued a ruling, applauded by the Obama administration, temporarily blocking the most contentious provision of the new law.
Arizona governor Jan brewer-who signed the law in April, says the preliminary injunction will be appealed. Gov. Brewer says, "It's a little bump in the road of course. We knew that whatever happened today one side or the other side was going to appeal. So this begins the process."

In her decision, Judge Susan Bolton blocked a provision allowing local police officers to check the immigration status of people stopped for other possible infractions whom the officers have a reasonable basis to suspect may be in the country illegally.

The provision that makes it a crime for illegal immigrants to apply for or work in Arizona was also blocked.

The u-s justice department responded in a statement saying quote: "While we understand the frustration of Arizonans with the broken immigration system, a patchwork of state and local policies would seriously disrupt federal immigration enforcement."

Arizona Attorney General, and Gubernatorial candidate for Governor, Terry Goddard, who opposed the new state law, says Wednesday's decision puts more pressure on the federal government. Goddard says, "Seems to me the federal government by taking this action has an absolute obligation to fix our broken immigration system."
