Nuclear commission rejects plan to abandon Yucca Mt.

June 30

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission´s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board has rejected the federal government´s plans to abandon Yucca Mountain as a national nuclear waste repository.

The Obama administration has denounced the nuclear waste repository in Nevada as not being the best option for taxpayers or the environment, and sought to have the permit application filed with the NRC to operate the facility withdrawn.

"We deny (the Department of Energy´s) motion to withdraw the application. We do so because the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended, does not permit the secretary the discretion to substitute his policy for the one established by congress," the regulatory agency wrote in a ruling published June 29.
