Rebate available for changing out old stoves

WHITE MOUNTAINS - American Lung Association in Arizona Director of Community Outreach Stephanie Winn said the organization is working closely with retailers/manufacturers in northern Arizona to encourage residents to take advantage of a rebate program to change out their old wood, gas or pellet burning coal stove or non-EPA certified wood stove for newer EPA-certified higher efficiency units.

The Clean Heat Exchange Program program kicked-off June 12 of this year with a Dec. 31, 2011 deadline to participate.
Winn said there are three levels of rebates offered to Navajo/Apache County residents through the Clean Heat Exchange Program. A limited number of low-income $3,000 rebates plus $1,000 and $1,500 rebates in greater numbers.
Funding for the rebate program comes from the Salt River Project (SRP) using money received through a settlement between them and the EPA.
The program is open to residents of Navajo and Apache counties who have non-EPA certified wood stoves or coal stoves that have been used in the previous heating season.
Winn said the Lung Association is not partnered with any retailers or manufacturers, but they are working closely with them to get the word out about the program. She said so far about 50 people are participating in it adding that in her opinion that is a very respectable total for just one month.
As for the limited number of low-income rebates, the way that works is thus:
A rebate of up to $3,000 towards the purchase and installation of a new EPA-certified wood, pellet or gas stove or fireplace insert is available for income-qualified homeowners who receive assistance from Food Stamps, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), Women, Infants, Children (WIC) and / or the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.
Additionally, retailers will be required to verify and submit documentation certifying homeowner's participation in one or more of the above mentioned programs.
One of the really appealing aspects is that according to Winn program rebates happen at the time of purchase rather than one where consumers have to mail in a coupon or voucher for and then wait for a check. Winn notes that it is also possible to receive additional rebates depending on whether or not a chosen retailer offers one above and beyond those offered through the Clean Heat Exchange Program. Any rebate amounts offered by the retailer would be determined by that retailer.
Participating retailers in Navajo County include: Wizard's White Mountain Stove, 1150 E. Deuce of Clubs, Show Low, (928) 537-1010, Weather Shack, Inc., 1918 E. Pinetop Dr., Heber, and US Insulation, 440 Industrial Way, Snowflake, (928) 536-4031.
Participating retailers in Apache County include Orona Enterprises, LLC , 89 N. Main St., Eagar, (928) 333-3851, Bill's Complete Chimney Service, 25 S. Mountain Ave., Springerville, (928) 333-5900 and Odom ACE Hardware, 1290 W. Cleveland St., St. Johns, (928) 337-2710.
