Clean Diesel Cars Gaining Popularity in the U.S.
Since clean diesel cars were
introduced to the
U.S. market
just over a year ago, they have been rising in popularity among American
consumers. A
recent study
commissioned by Bosch found that when both diesel and
gasoline engine options are offered in a single car model, U.S. drivers
are increasingly choosing the diesel-powered option. Advanced diesel
cars offer consumers better fuel economy, reduced emissions and greater
torque than its gasoline engine counterpart. Additionally, according to
Edmunds,
diesels pay for themselves in just over two years, which is
significantly faster than the return realized by other
alternative-fueled vehicles. You can compare the value of purchasing a
diesel vehicle to other vehicle models using
Edmunds True Cost
to Own Calculator. The Bosch analysis of new car
registrations for the 12-month period beginning January 2009 found that
approximately 30 percent of the vehicles had clean diesel engines.
Supporting that finding, a recent
USA Today article
revealed the growth of clean diesel vehicle purchases in the U.S. seen
by auto manufacturers in the past year, notably, 85 percent of Jetta
SportWagens purchased were diesel models. Since diesel already is found
at many fueling stations across the country, no new infrastructure will
need to be developed or built to support the rising numbers of clean
diesel cars on the road.
