University of Missouri to replace coal-fired boiler

June 15

A coal-fired boiler at the University of Missouri´s main campus is being replaced with a biomass boiler.

The contract for the replacement is held by Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group Inc. of Barberton, Ohio. The company will design, engineer and supply a 150,000 pound-per-hour bubbling fluidized bed that will burn chipped hardwood and other opportunity fuels. It will be retrofit in the existing physical plant on campus. The plant provides the university campus with electricity and steam for heating and other uses.

"B&W PGG is pleased to be selected for this important, trend-setting project," said B&W PGG President and Chief Operating Officer Richard L. Killion. "Other colleges and universities are likely to take notice of the University of Missouri´s decision to convert its physical plant to utilize a renewable, environmentally friendly fuel and we are confident B&W PGG has the technology to meet their needs."

The new boiler, using wood and waste wood, will result in fewer emissions and less ash waste than its old coal-fired plant. It is expected to be in place by the end of summer 2011.
