Stimulus money to fund horse manure-to-energy project

March 30

Federal stimulus money is helping fund a horse manure-to-energy project in Kentucky.

The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington is spending $1.95 million to purchase and install what´s being called a manure bioenergy management facility.

"This project is a prime example of how Recovery Act funding is helping local communities," said Acting EPA Regional Administrator Stan Meiburg. "The construction of the new manure bioenergy management facility will provide an on-site solution for waste disposal, generating renewable electricity and protecting the environment."

The horse park has spent an average of $200,000 per year on horse manure disposal. The new facility will eliminate those costs, the EPA said.
