US coal production in February falls 6.6% on year: EIA data

US coal production totaled about 21.8 million short tons in the week that ended Saturday, the Energy Information Administration said Thursday.

This production estimate, based on railcar loadings, is about the same as the previous week's estimate and 3% lower than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2009, EIA said.

Production east of the Mississippi River totaled 9.2 million st while production west of the Mississippi totaled 12.6 million st, it said.

Meanwhile, coal production for the month of February totaled 83.3 million st, which was 6.6% lower than output in February 2009, EIA said.
