Perma-Fix successfully treats tritium-contaminated
waste
May 27
Perma-Fix Environmental Services Inc. says the company successfully
treated tritium-contaminated equipment and material.
The demonstration showed that tritium-containing waste streams that also
contain hazardous waste components can be safely managed with "minimal
to no release of tritium using non-thermal treatment processes."
The system captures tritium and allows it to be managed separately as a
low-level radioactive waste, the company said.
"This latest treatment demonstration offers DOE new capabilities to
address wastes that have been in long term storage with no clear
disposition path, said Louis F. Centofanti, CEO of Atlanta-based Perma-Fix.
The material that was tested came from the U.S. Department of Energy´s
Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C.
