Fertilizer company ordered to inventory containers

Oct. 25

An agricultural fertilizer company is being ordered to inventory containers and make waste determinations after a previous inspection found "a number of suspected solid and hazardous wastes at the site," according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

MagnaGro Corp., of Lawrence, Kan., was the site of an April accident where two employees died of asphyxiation while cleaning a storage tank, the EPA said. The EPA inspected the facility in June and July.

The site has been closed since the City of Lawrence shut down operations at MagnaGro on July 21, 2010, after Sawyer failed to address a series of city code violations, the EPA alleged.

MagnaGro can request an administrative hearing with EPA within 30 days of the order, the EPA said.
