Stop the Stalling

As DOE tests on E15 come to a close, Big Oil is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the EPA in an attempt to stall them from approving the use of higher blends of ethanol in our fuel. For the second time this week, oil-backed groups have called on Washington to reject the use of E15 with the blatantly misleading claim that ethanol could harm engines and that it is untested – despite ethanol’s long history as a fuel in this country, and mountains of data that E15 is perfectly safe.

But an interesting response to the attacks popped up on the Auto Channel, where Executive VP Marc J. Rauch wrote in an article today, “The group, which calls itself ‘FollowTheScience.com,’ should really be called ‘Follow The Money – the Gasoline Industry’s Money.’ They are purveyors of lies, distortions and gross misconceptions.”

As Rauch correctly states, ethanol has been tested for more than a century. The earliest cars – including Henry Ford’s Model T – were first designed to run on high-octane ethanol. Even oil companies used to blend their gasoline with ethanol, to increase octane, before they decided to replace ethanol with lead, one of the world’s deadliest toxins, for the sake of corporate profits. (That’s another interesting history you can read here.)

Test after test by the government, by university researchers, and by independent automotive experts have proven that today’s cars and trucks are fully capable of running on E15. Growth Energy’s Green Jobs Waiver was accompanied with more supporting academic, government and third-party research than any of the 11 previous waivers approved by EPA – including the first waiver, to move to E10.

Moving to E15 is a step we can take today to strengthen our national security, our economy and our environment. According to various studies, going to E15 from E10 would create 136,000 American jobs, cut emissions equivalent to taking 1.35 million cars from the road, and displace as much as 7 billion gallons of gasoline refined from foreign oil.

So, let’s stop the stalling tactics and make our country stronger. Support the use of E15 in our fuel for a cleaner, brighter future.
