The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network’s (APTN) Down2Earth environmental-documentary show is a winner in the first Canadian Environmental Media Awards, to be handed out on April 16.

Starting this year the Green Living Show, a showcase of environmentally friendly products and services run by the environmental-image consulting firm Green Living Online, is recognizing media that contribute to a greater understanding of environmental issues.

APTN’s new documentary series Down2Earth explores indigenous solutions to man-made environmental problems, sharing environmental success stories that can give viewers ideas on how to implement solutions on their own turf. Director and producer Barbara Hager will accept her award at the Green Living Show on April 16. This clip shows the Huu-ay-aht First Nation’s project to farm the endangered abalone.

Also winning was a documentary on the Alberta oil sands, Petropolis: Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands, which Green Living calls “an unparalleled view of the world’s largest industrial, capital and energy project,” directed by Peter Mettler and produced by Spencer Tripp, Sandy Hunter and Laura Severinac.

The awards were chosen by a jury of Canadian and American media professionals, APTN said.

The Green Living Show, an exhibition of environmentally friendly products and services, is being held in Toronto from April 15–17.
