Coal provides about 45% of U.S. electricity, yet up to 20% of the nation's coal generation could be retired in the next two decades. What will replace that?

Coal is responsible for about a third of carbon dioxide emissions and releases double the sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide of other energy sources. With various state and federal environmental regulations on the horizon, coal plants have no choice but to make changes.

Reports suggest developing and implementing the technology to clean carbon and bury it could cost up to $70 billion. Is it smarter to put that money toward the cleaner, cheaper option of natural gas and, as the glitches are ironed out, wind and solar energy?
