Veolia Water North America Joins National Call To Action To Prevent Freshwater CrisisJanuary 26, 2011 Recently, Veolia Water North America (VWNA) announced it has joined a group of leading businesses, environmental NGOs, farmers and other stakeholders calling for action to avert a looming freshwater crisis in the U.S. VWNA signed on to "Charting New Waters: A Call to Action to Address U.S. Freshwater Challenges," a landmark report issued by The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread. The report was signed by some of nation's foremost organizations advocating for changes in how we consume and manage freshwater, one of the nation's most important and strategic resources. "Freshwater availability has been predicted to become a major limitation factor for growth for cities and industries in many locations around the world," said Laurent Auguste, president & CEO, Veolia Water Americas. "Public authorities, citizens and industries must all work together to ensure the sustainable future of our local water resources. Being a part of Charting New Waters is one major step towards finding a long-term practical solution." "By signing on to Charting New Waters, Veolia Water is demonstrating its active commitment to sustainable freshwater policies and practices," said Lynn Broaddus, director, environment programs at The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread. "This is the kind of leadership needed if we are to be successful in preserving this vital resource for future generations of Americans." Charting New Waters is a consensus report coming out of more than two years of collaboration among diverse interests. The report identifies the serious challenges facing freshwater in the United States and offers specific recommendations to address the risks associated with inaction. Some of the recommendations in the report include streamlining cooperation between federal, state and local governments; creating a national commission to address our freshwater challenges; and improved accounting and reporting mechanisms in order to better understand the true value of this vital resource. The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread is dedicated to serving as a catalyst for change by bringing together leading thinkers and inspiring new solutions on major environmental and regional issues. Building on this legacy, The Johnson Foundation Freshwater Summit issued "Charting New Waters: A Call to Action to Address U.S. Freshwater Challenges" in September 2010 in Washington, D.C.
