Whittier, CA (Marketwire) - In response to news reports, about e-waste recycling programs sending their waste to China for processing, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County announced today that all of the e-waste collected at the weekly Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors sponsored Household Hazardous/E-Waste (HHEW) Collection Events is, and has been, recycled entirely within the United States.

"We carefully audit our contractor to make sure that they abide by our requirements to completely deconstruct all e-waste down to the commodity level within the United States," said Steve Maguin, Chief Engineer and General Manager of the Sanitation Districts.

In 2010, approximately 1.4 million pounds of e-waste was collected at 62 one-day HHEW collection events and sent to E-World Recyclers in Vista, California for recycling. This includes CRTs and all miscellaneous e-wastes.

The Sanitation Districts function on a regional scale and consist of 23 independent special districts serving about 5.7 million people in Los Angeles County. The service area encompasses 78 cities and unincorporated territory within the county. The Sanitation Districts protect public health and the environment through innovative and cost-effective wastewater and solid waste management, and in doing so convert waste into resources such as recycled water, energy, and recycled materials.
