
The U.S. may retire up to 50 GW of coal-fired generation without harming system reliability, according to a report from ICF International (NASDAQ: ICFI).
The report, Retiring Coal Plants While Protecting System Reliability, said proposed regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency could force the closure of 30 to 50 GW of coal-fired generation. In order to keep the system stable, system operators must do a security analysis of transmission and implement the retirements in a realistic timeframe.
