Question: I have heard that vitamin B12 can help with brain function, including memory. Is that true? Dr. Brownstein's Answer: B-vitamins are vitally important for brain function. Vitamin B12, in particular, has been shown to have many positive effects on brain function. I have personally found that vitamin B12 therapy helps patients suffering from fatigue, memory decline, Alzheimer’s, and depression. In a study on B-vitamins, researchers looked at 900 subjects who received 400 mcg of folic acid (vitamin B9) and 100 mcg of either vitamin B12 or placebo for two years. Cognitive function was measured at various time periods. The authors reported in the January 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that, as compared to the placebo group, those who received the folic acid and B12 had better immediate and delayed recall.
