Contamination discovered at PPL nuclear plant

Aug 13 - McClatchy-Tribune Regional News - Dave Janoski The Citizens' Voice, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported this morning that radioactive contamination was unexpectedly found last week on a trailer used to transport fuel at PPL's nuclear power plant in Salem Township.

The contamination did not exceed regulatory limits or pose a hazard to the general public, according to a statement from the NRC.

The radioactive cesium found on the trailer is not characteristically produced by the two reactors at the Salem Township site, according to a report from PPL to the NRC.

The trailer has been loaned to other nuclear plants in the past, according to the report. Plant personnel are removing the contamination and the two reactors at the site continue to operate.
