In 1519, Hernando Cortez reached the ancient city of the Aztecs and
was greeted by soldiers who resembled today's modern Olympians. The
soldiers had physiques like nothing Cortez had seen before. If you
remember your history, you're probably asking how Cortez defeated this
great Aztec army. The answer is simple--lies and deception. The rest is
for the history books.
One thing I reflect on when remembering that story is that the Aztec
soldiers were true survivalists. They were large, they were strong, and
could run for days. It's much like what we see when we watch the
Olympics. Just like Olympians they would train constantly. As
survivalists they knew what they needed to survive on their long runs
and they would bring as little as possible.
Just One Handful Of This Super-food!
Can you believe that it's said they would bring with them just a
handful of this nutrient dense super-food? Now if you are into storing
food like I am, just thinking about this is completely blowing my mind.
These people could put a handful of this stuff in their pocket, go for a
run, and get the nutrients that they felt they needed to survive.
Now I'm thinking, "You're telling me, they knew what was needed to
survive and their soldiers could do it on just a handful of this amazing
super-food?" I just had to know what this phenomenal super-food was. The
problem was that once Cortez knew this information, he decided to make
sure that this super-food was destroyed. He saw it as an unfair
advantage that his soldiers did not have, so instead of learning the
Aztec's way of life, he ordered his troops to destroy it. Cortez wanted
to erase even the slightest memory of it.
Well, guess what. Cortez could not keep this amazing secret from us
forever. History tells us that the Aztec's grew four staple crops. Three
of them remain widespread today: corn, beans, and amaranth. The fourth
crop was this Olympian style super-food... the super-food that was so
powerful that someone threatened to erase its existence from the history
books all together. And the super-food that strongly aided in the
formation of these huge Olympian-type soldiers was chia.
Cortez ordered that all the chia fields be burned as he attempted to rid
this super-food from history. By 1521, the Aztec empire had crumbled and
chia was all but forgotten for nearly half a millennium.
Forgotten... But Not Extinct
Because chia grows wild, high in the mountains and in wilderness
areas that are hard to get to, Cortez couldn't burn it all. Over
hundreds of years, the secrets of chia were handed down from generation
to generation. For centuries, it remained a closely guarded secret of
the Tarahumara Indians, a remote mountain tribe descended from the
Aztecs.
The secret eventually got out because, like their Aztec forefathers, the
Tarahumara Indians were remarkable specimens. Their prowess as
long-distance runners was legendary... and when modern day runners heard
about them, they sought to duplicate what the Tarahumara did in order to
boost their own running performance.
And that's when chia was rediscovered. (Now, die-hard athletes swear by
chia and refuse to go a day without it.)
Why Even The Poorest Of Aztecs Were Healthier
Than We Are Today... And How Chia Can Help You Turn It Around
When it comes to nutrition, chia is truly the total package. Chia
contains protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fats. Space
doesn't permit me here to expound upon all the virtues of chia's
nutrients, but I'd like to spend a minute or two on the omega-3 fats.
Modern nutritionists cracked the code to omega-3 fats only in the 1980s.
Before that, we didn't really understand what they were or how they
worked. But the bottom line is this: the healthiest populations eat
plenty of omega-3 fats. Aztecs, whether they were leaders or among the
lower classes, got plenty of omega-3 fats, especially in the form of
chia.
Americans today? Not so much. Instead of omega-3 fats, we get a lot of
omega-6 fats. And that's why so many of us enjoy less-than-optimum
health.
70% of the American diet today consists of just 4 crops: wheat, barley,
corn, and rice. That's where we're getting so many omega-6 fats from,
and even though we need some, we get way too many in proportion to
omega-3s.
You see, for optimum health, you need to get your omega fats in the
proper ratios. The proper ratio is about 2:1, omega-6 to omega-3. Today,
we've skewed that ratio to 20:1.
Omega-3 fats are important for heart health and for brain health, among
other things. Omega-3 fats also provide a high energy reserve, giving
you endurance and stamina, and they help you weather external stressors
like cold temperatures. They're important building blocks of hormones,
and they protect your nervous system. We don't get nearly enough of
these healthy fats today... and our bodies are paying the price.
And it's not just the wheat and corn that are messing with our omega fat
balance. Until just a few decades ago, we ate livestock that was almost
exclusively grass fed... which meant that the meat contained healthy
amounts of omega-3 fats. But today, we feed our livestock grain--and
that means the omega-6 fats so prevalent in grains pass right through
into the meat.
That's why
Aztec Black Chia is such a valuable superfood for your daily diet.
It's the richest non-marine source of omega-3 fats found on the planet.
The omega-3 fats alone make Aztec Black Chia one of the most important
foods you could eat. But there are many other reasons why chia is so
valuable. For instance:
- Chia's soluble fiber acts as a barrier between simple
carbohydrates and your digestive system... slowing down
absorption... ensuring that sugars and carbs are slowly and steadily
available for energy... helping you avoid those sugar spikes and
sugar crashes.
- Chia gel (made by mixing 1 part chia with 9 parts water) is a
great way to control your calorie intake. Chia gel can be added to
all kinds of foods without compromising the flavor. It helps extend
the food and displace calories. The gel's smooth texture and mild
flavor makes it virtually unnoticeable.
- Chia is the perfect survival food. It's shelf-stable and
requires no refrigeration. Store it carefully away from temperature
extremes, and it will easily last a couple of years. Because it's so
lightweight, nutrient dense, and portable, it's ideal for outdoor
sports like hiking, camping, and canoeing. Keep some in your
backpack, briefcase, or purse, and you'll have an instant energy
snack to help you stay focused and energized.
When it comes to incorporating chia into your diet, you're only
limited by your imagination. If you're looking for a way to boost your
performance--whether it's at work or at play--take the important step of
including chia in your daily diet. To get your supply of Aztec Black
Chia, or to learn more about it,
