Netherlands: As Socialists Advance, Merkel Loses
Recent polls show Dutch voters moving much farther left, and much more
likely to vote for leftists in the parliamentary elections next month.
This is likely to not only change the political situation in the
Netherlands, but to also affect the debate over austerity in the
Eurozone and slow progress toward reform. The swift implementation of
reforms advocated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel may be key to
preventing a total collapse of the European Union and a deepening of the
debt crisis on the continent. The Netherlands may not stand in her way,
but it is likely to make her job harder.
