New York packing big solar impact

New York is looking to invest in solar and it has sweetened the pot with $107 million in incentives to increase the amount of electricity generated by PV systems throughout New York.

In 2012, $36.4 million of the $107 million will be available. The remaining $70.5 million will be available in 2013. The NY-Sun Competitive PV Program, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, seeks proposals for PV systems greater than 50 kW to be installed at larger commercial and industrial customer sites. The funding will be capped at $3 million per project.

This is an expansion of a program that focused on large PV systems for the commercial, industrial, and municipal sectors exclusively in New York City, Westchester County, and the lower Hudson Valley.

The $107 million incentive comes on the heels of new laws to make solar more affordable in New York, including statewide tax credits for the lease of solar equipment and power purchase agreements, statewide sales tax exemptions for commercial solar equipment, and an extension of the real property tax abatement in New York City for solar installations.
