New fuel efficiency standards set stage for energy independence

In light of new vehicle fuel efficiency standards of 54.5 miles per gallon on average by 2025, the BlueGreen Alliance and the Natural Resources Defense Council have announced a state-by-state analysis of the benefits this could provide.

By 2030, the U.S. is project to save nearly 23 billion gallons of gasoline in and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 270 million metric tons. Consumers could see $54 billion in net savings. The new fuel efficiency standards will also relieve some of the United States' dependence on foreign oil.

These savings and the environmental benefits of emissions reductions could increase customers' interest in energy efficiency, and open the door a little wider to utilities marketing such products and services while trying to alleviate load from the grid.
