Power plant emissions a global problem

Launched in 2007, the Center for Global Development's online Carbon Monitoring for Action (CARMA) database has been expanded and upgraded to incorporate data from more than 60,000 power plants across 200 countries. Electricity production is responsible for about one-fourth of all greenhouse gas pollution.

CARMA reveals that seven of the top 10 carbon dioxide emitting power plants globally are in Asia, with plants in South Korea claiming four of the top six spots. China, the U.S., and India are the world's top three countries for power plant emissions, according to CARMA.

Over the past five years, an increasing number of companies and governments (more than one-third globally) have begun to officially disclose power plant emission data.

CARMA stakes claim to being the only global database for tracking specific sources of CO2. Future projections are available based on power companies' expansion plans.
