Waste Pro USA Inc. opened its first compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station earlier this week, a $15 million facility in Fort Pierce, Fla.

The new CNG fueling station is part of Longwood, Fla.-based Waste Pro's $100 million investment to transition its fleet of heavy trucks from diesel fuel to CNG.

Waste Pro said it will follow up with a second CNG station in Palm Coast, Fla., tcpalm.com reported. In the coming years, stations will be built in Sanford, Fort Myers, Tampa Bay and Tallahassee.

In Fort Pierce, 20 new $300,000 MAC trucks equipped with CNG motors will make their routes in the next week or two, the news organization said. By the time the fleet is completed, there will be 50 to 70 trucks, Waste Pro Senior Vice President Ron Pecora told the news organization.

"Due to the high volume of business we have there and the large volume of work in Fort Pierce, it was the perfect time to implement our first natural gas fueling facility," Pecora said. "Natural gas is readily available nearby, so lines could be extended."

CNG provider Seal Beach, Calif.-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. designed and constructed the facility.
