EU Peace Prize: Another Nobel Embarrassment
The selection of the European Union as the recipient of the 2012 Nobel
Peace Prize is questionable on a number of levels, but most of all
because it ignores the NATO alliance, which has done even more to
guarantee peace on the continent since World War II. The EU’s award is
the latest example of the Nobel Committee's increasing politicization

Should Japan Rearm to Counter Chinese Imperialism?
Recent statements by Philippine’s foreign minister in support of a
rearmed Japan highlight Southeast Asia’s unease over China’s
increasingly aggressive efforts to grab disputed territory. More
interestingly, the statements suggest that the Philippines is hoping to
form a unified front, comprised of well-armed allies, to counter Chinese
imperialism.

Brazil: Court Decision Improves Chevron’s Prospects
Chevron’s [NYSE: CVX] decision to offer $149 million to settle two
lawsuits stemming from a relatively minor offshore oil spill in November
2011 appears likely to improve what had been an uncertain situation for
the company in Brazil. The settlement is a good faith offer by Chevron
to mend relations with government officials days after a Brazilian
appeals court ruled to overturn a ban on the company’s operations that
had been in effect since July.
