Smart City San Diego launches solar canopy project
The San Diego Zoo, part of Smart City San Diego, is among one of the first to implement a solar-to-EV project where 10 canopies provide 90 kW to charge electric vehicles.

The Kyocera solar panels harness the sun's energy to charge EVs and provide renewable energy to the grid, while its high-tech battery system stores solar power for future use. Using new lithium-polymer battery technology, when the battery is full, excess energy generated from sunlight is put into the grid to improve reliability to the surrounding community.
Smart City San Diego is a collaboration between San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), General Electric, CleanTECH San Diego, the city of San Diego and UC San Diego to develop and implement initiatives that will empower consumers, improve environmental quality, drive economic growth, and reduce San Diego's reliance on oil. The projects as part of Smart City San Diego are intended to improve the region's energy independence, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and position San Diego as a clean energy leader.
