Utilities losing billions in wasted waterApproximately two-thirds of the world's population, or 4.6 billion people, will experience water stressed conditions within the next decade. These conditions stem from water demand that exceeds the available amount during a certain period or when poor quality restricts its use. Research from Sensus of more than 180 utilities globally reveals that these utilities are losing a collective $9.6 billion each year from leaked water. Globally, utilities are spending nearly $184 billion annually to supply clean water and $14 billion alone on energy costs needed to pump water. By implementing smart water networks, the savings would allow 5 percent of the utilities' budgets to be reinvested for other needs. Zpryme's Smart Grid Insights and FierceSmartGrid are conducting a survey to assess the current sentiment and outlook for the Smart Grid industry on a monthly basis. We would like to invite utility, energy, and Smart Grid executives to participate in this month's survey. Click here to take the survey. Sensus contends that utilities worldwide can save up to $12.5 billion a year by implementing smart water networks. "Water utilities are under pressure from growing demand, aging water systems and increasing energy prices," said Peter Mainz, president and CEO of Sensus. "Smart water networks can ease that pressure and save utilities worldwide billions of dollars each year. These savings mean more than 5 percent of utilities' budgets could be reinvested to improve water networks and help address the global water scarcity crisis." For more: |
