Medical waste exports may be returning to U.S.

Feb. 13 -- There may be 46.6 tons of medical waste returning to Charleston, S.C., after Brazil rejected its importation, but officials in the United States couldnīt confirm the reports, the Post and Courier reported.

News reports from Brazil said the material was sent originally from South Carolina, and it was being sent back. A state official told the newspaper that there had been no notification that the waste was headed to South Carolina, something that is necessary for the waste to enter the cityīs port.

Adam Myrick, spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, told the newspaper that he couldnīt say if the news accounts in Brazil were bogus, but it seemed unusual that hospital waste from Charleston would be sent to Brazil.
