The Woodlands Twp., Texas, switches to single-stream

Jan. 25 – The Woodlands Township in Texas has begun a single-stream recycling service.

Waste Management Inc. began delivering 96-gallon recycling carts to single-family homes on Jan. 2 and should complete the deliveries by the end of the month, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Discarded containers should be rinsed and no food-stained cardboard or paper products will be taken, the paper reported.

The trash is sent to Waste Management’s new facility in Houston that uses optical scanners and computer technology for sorting.

Residents have been calling the township’s Environmental Services with questions about the new system.

"The phones are pretty active right now," Lynne Aldrich, manager of Environmental Services for the Township, told the Chronicle. "For people who really like to recycle, this is awesome. But it´s changing habits and rearranging things, and that always causes anxiety."
