German renewable energy mix growing rapidly

Solar power accounted for 10 percent of Germany's total electricity production in May 2012, up 40 percent from 2011, according to the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry. Germany is one of the largest producers of PV technology as well as the biggest consumer of per capita solar energy worldwide. Strong demand, a highly skilled workforce, intensive research and development, and a supportive political framework supportive of renewables make it easy for Germany to increase the proportion of renewables in its energy portfolio. "Germany's decision to replace nuclear energy with other sources is proving to not only be possible, but is creating many valuable prospects for the renewables sector," said Tobias Homann, a photovoltaic industry expert from Germany Trade & Invest.
