Republic Services, Arizona county share in $1.5M landfill fine

Republic Services Inc. and Maricopa County (Ariz.) Solid Waste Department will share in a $1.5 million fine over various violations at the now-closed Queen Creek Landfill, East Valley Independent Newspapers reported.

The Maricopa County Solid Waste Department owns the landfill and Republic Services, as Allied Waste, operated the facility from 1996 to when it closed in 2007. The landfill opened in 1972, the newspaper reported.

Republic Services is paying $710,000 and the county is paying the remaining $790,000, the newspaper reported, with most of the money being set aside for environmental projects to benefit air quality in the county.

The newspaper said there were 12 violations spanning from 1996 to 2007, including lack of reporting air quality data requirements and others.

"The $710,000 is our contribution to the global settlement with Solid Waste and town of Queen Creek," Republic spokeswoman Peg Mulloy told the newspaper via email. "We operated the site for a period of time, which is why we are a named party."

The landfill is located approximately 42 miles southeast of Phoenix.
