Winners in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) "Apps for Energy" competition have been announced. The competition was intended to facilitate innovative mobile and web applications that will help energy consumers save money using "Green Button" electricity usage data. And that they did. For traditional energy, Zerofootprint's VELObill app makes it easier for customers to view energy usage and create an energy saving action plan tailored to individual needs and preferences. The app allows users to actually experience what it's like to upload real data from Green Button. Renewable energy cannot and did not go overlooked. The "Innovative Solar Demand Response" app uses Green Button Data to size a Solar PV and a battery system based on average peak energy demand of a home during different hours of the day. The battery is charged by solar PV when solar radiation is available and a charge/discharge controller releases the stored energy during peak times, when energy production is more costly.
