Not too long ago, a friend of
mine brought up an interesting point about a disparity between Mother's
Day and Father's Day (besides the obvious one!). Society approaches
these two seemingly similar holidays in completely different ways. On
Mother's Day, we take Mom out to eat, give her flowers, and hear many
sources extol the wonderful qualities of mothers. Everyone from clothing
companies to local clergy spend the day praising moms. Father's Day is
not quite the same though. Sure, Dad gets his tie and homemade card, but
many people take Father's Day as an opportunity to chastise the fathers
who are not stepping up rather than praising the dads who are doing it
right. Pay attention, and you'll realize the observation is generally
correct.
Because of that, I thought I'd take the day to say thank you to the dads
who are doing it right. Thank you for raising your kids to be
respectable, responsible young adults. Thank you for teaching them the
value of hard work and discipline. Thank you for showing them the way a
husband should treat his wife. Thank you for your example.
I know you dads probably get a little flack from time to time, but don't
let it stop you from doing your job. I remember many a huff and sigh I
made when my father interrupted me and my Barbies so I could hold a
light while he worked in his shop, keep him company while he changed a
tire, or hand him tools while he fixed a leaky faucet. Now I can see the
benefit of it all, especially when I get my own flats and leaky faucets.
I think my dad summed it up best when he was telling an ex-boyfriend
that I could handle myself more than he was giving me credit for: "I
didn't raise my little girl to be made of glass." No you didn't Daddy.
Thank you for that.
I won't remind you what you need to be teaching your children--you
already know. But don't forget that even in our age of technological
advances, those old-school techniques for living with self-sufficiency
are still as valuable as ever. They are one of the greatest legacies you
can pass on to your kids.
