Rhode Island's statewide switch to single-stream recycling has finally come.

After six months and a $16.9 million renovation project, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation's (RIRRC) materials recovery facility will officially open tomorrow, according to a news release.

The program, called Recycling Together RI, allows recyclables to be mixed together; new optical sorting equipment will process recyclables, according to the program website.

All plastics, aluminum, paper and cardboard, glass, cartons, metal cans and foil may be thrown into one recycling bin. Items not accepted include plastic bags, refrigerated and frozen food boxes, plastic containers larger than two gallons, Styrofoam and hot beverage cups, among others.

The RIRRC owns and operates the state's Central Landfill and recycling services in Johnston.
