There's a Shortage in America

There's a shortage in America. I would say that this shortage is perhaps the most detrimental thing to ever face our country. Without this commodity, which cannot be mined, drilled, or manufactured at will, we face some of the gravest moments in our future as a nation.

The sad thing is, the majority of our citizens don't even realize that there is this shortage. In fact, they would argue just the opposite, that there is an amazing abundance of it. They go about their days, living their lives, blissfully ignorant. They live in a self-cocooning bubble which insulates them from reality. Our handlers, the Powers That Be as I call them, have created this Matrix-like world and perpetuate the illusion at all cost.

They tell us there's nothing to worry about, that middle class America is "doing fine," that they have everything under control. It's like we're in the middle of a house burning down and they're trying to convince everyone that there really isn't a fire. Unfortunately, too many are too willing to turn back to their bubbles of comfort and believe them.

What is this commodity that I'm speaking about?

Knowledge.

Before you roll your eyes, consider this. I come into contact with people on a daily basis. I live in a small town with small farms dotting the landscape. Yet in my neighborhood alone there's only one woman who used to help her family garden (and she swears she'll never harvest another pea again) and the rest have not a clue about the process of food growing, harvesting, and preserving if they can't pick it up in a plastic bag in the grocery store and stick it in a freezer.

And they don't care to know.

They can program a cell phone, set a DVR up to record a vast array of television shows, can get on the computer, create blogs, and use html coding to make it look just perfect, run a business, shuttle their kids from one sport to another, discuss the intricacies of investments in this or that commodity...

... yet cannot snap a green bean, put it in a jar, and preserve it for a later time.

Have we become so smart that we're getting dumber? We can manufacture a nuclear weapon but we can't grow a garden? We can genetically modify seed but we can't preserve our food? Where are our priorities?

Don't misunderstand... I'm coming from the same place as most of you. I was that city slicker once. I had not a clue how to grow the first thing, even though my dad came from a long line of self-sufficiency. But the scales have dropped from my eyes, and I can tell you in all truthfulness that...

... things are NOT all right.

This world we live in is an illusion we have manufactured for ourselves and unless we face reality, the future is going to be hard, if not impossible, to cope with. Big Ag has created a crisis in our food system with their corporate farms and genetically modified foods. Just-in-time inventory means that there is only three days worth of food at any one time in any grocery store in America... if a looming disaster doesn't wipe the shelves off in 30 minutes after the announcement.

Our handlers encourage us to have enough food on hand to face 72 hours of being cut off from the rest of the world. Those really intrepid souls will encourage you to have a week's supply on hand. Really? How'd that work for the folks on the coast during Katrina? Even this far inland, 6 weeks after Katrina, people were still cutting trees off their houses and trying to figure out how they were going to make it just one more day.

What do you do when the grocery stores aren't just empty, but gone? Your few cans of beans and one jar of spaghetti sauce won't go too far. And even if you have a freezer full of food, after about 3 days without power, that's a dried up source. What will you do then?

I can tell you what I'm doing... I'm learning to preserve my own food. This bumper crop I'm experiencing right now? Every bit of it is going into a jar, one way or another, whether through canning or dehydrating. Squash, green beans, corn, pickles, peas, beans, meats... it doesn't matter what. If there's an abundant supply, it's getting preserved.

If you're like me, and have decided to take control of your own future and to quit putting it in the hands of others (and to quit listening to what they think is enough preparation for any disaster), then I have the very thing you need to get started... the DVD set Food Storage Secrets.

This DVD set takes you from start to finish in food preservation, with explanations about equipment, food preparation, instructions on canning, and an accompanying eBook that gives you everything you need at your fingertips to successfully begin your canning and food preservation journey. This DVD more than pays for itself with the first foods you begin to put away from your garden harvest.

Some of the information you'll learn includes:

  • How to make your canned foods taste five times better than grocery store food.
  • What you absolutely must learn about vegetable acidity.
  • Advice many "old time" canners give that is dead wrong.
  • Three mistakes to avoid when boiling and cooking produce.
  • How to store your canning equipment.
  • The right kind of salt to use when canning. (It's NOT table salt!)
  • An easy way to determine which foods can be canned and which ones can't.
  • The one meat that can't be canned in a quart jar.
  • How to process and prepare almost any type of food.
  • One deadly mistake beginning canners make and how to avoid it.
  • Canning times and pressure tables for 39 different meats.
  • Canning times and pressure tables for 21 different fruits.
  • Altitude charts you can't can without.
  • The only safe way to can meats.
  • How to get more vitamins, minerals, and trace elements into your canned food.

The Food Storage Secrets DVDs are an excellent resource for folks new to the canning experience. This is real knowledge, useful knowledge, information that you can adapt and apply in any situation. And that's the test of true intelligence... whether you can improvise and adapt to your surroundings. A computer is not going to feed you. The stock market can go up or down... it won't put one jar on the shelf. You can't prepare for disaster with simply a pencil and a clipboard.

Two short generations ago, the information contained in this DVD series was common knowledge. Today it's a dying and lost art because we're conditioned to believe that it's no longer needed. Are you going to be in the majority and let the house burn down around you, while the Powers That Be tell you everything is okay? Or are you going to be one of the exceptional ones, one of the few who actually looks around, sees what is happening, and starts searching for water to control the blaze?
