Climate Group calls for cleantech, renewable energy "revolution"

The Climate Group is calling for an "American Clean Revolution" to scale up investment in cleantech and renewable energy.

The group believes this will future-proof American infrastructure, boost the economy and avert catastrophic weather events caused by global warming.

Climate Group research claims that 1980s weather-related insurance costs to the U.S. economy were $3 billion a year. In 2012 it is $20 billion and rising. Since 1980, coastal disasters have surpassed $560 billion in damages not including the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the research says.

The research contends that if America fails to act in the global cleantech race other countries may overtake it. In 2011, China passed the U.S. as the largest wind producer by capacity and is set to become the world's largest wind energy generator.
