EPA approves 30 years of monitoring at site of coal-ash spill in Tennessee

The U.S. EPA has approved a plan to stop cleanup at the site of a major 2008 coal-ash spill in Tennessee and monitor the site for the next 30 years, The Associated Press reported.

Residents in the area near Roane County, Tenn., will have the ability to comment on the measure, the news organization said. The cost of monitoring will cost an additional $10 million. An estimated 5.4 million cubic yards of ash spilled after a containment dike, owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority, failed.

A citizens group told the Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel that it generally supports the monitoring plan, but more should be done to help the community recover.
