This week's quote from Calvin
Coolidge is particularly poignant in light of Hurricane Sandy's
devastating aftermath on our eastern seaboard. I read the news reports
with tears in my eyes because I know how these people feel--I understand
their heartbreak, their devastation, and their need to identify
someone... anyone... out there who cares about what's happening to them.
I think they're beginning to find out that their government does not.
The government, like any entity, talks a good talk for public relations
and good will, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, it's your
friends, your neighbors, the members of your religious houses of
worship, and those of the community who stand in the gap for you.
Your government continues on with plans to host a race while the
people in the community suffer the loss of basic civilization and
infrastructure. People are without food, water, and electricity -- yet
there are three powerful generators sitting in Central Park to power up
the media tent for Sunday's New York City Marathon -- two running and
one idle for the backup. Food service trucks for the event are dropping
off hundreds of cases of bottled water to be sold Sunday, while the
hurricane victims dumpster dive and search desperately for supplies.
This is the government we have created. This government is our
master. We don't control it. We have a choice this Tuesday, a choice to
stick with the status quo and continue down this path of bureaucratic
dependency or take back the reins of government that belong to us and
begin to right this ship of state. The fix won't be easy or quick, but
it can be done.
You cannot depend on an impersonal construct such as government to
save you. You must reach down to the inner recesses of your soul, drag
out that spirit of stubbornness and gutsy determination, and take
control of your fate and your future. I've seen enough of government to
know it is a cold-blooded mistress that thinks nothing of driving us all
over a cliff. I'm tired of the backroom liaisons and the illicit affairs
that keep her coffers full and her belly fat while we the people suffer
so.
And on November the 6th, I'm going to help her start packing her
bags.
