80 Million People Can’t Be Wrong

I'm a little concerned about this next election. As a gun owner, I'm joined by 80 million other adult gun owners across this nation who share my trepidation. Gun manufacturers can't keep up with firearm demand, and national retailers like Cabela's and the Bass Pro Shops are planning huge inventory increases should the president win re-election. In fact, firearms background checks have risen 200% during these past four years of the Obama administration as people snatch up weapons in anticipation of more gun control laws. And they have a right to be worried. Gun confiscation has happened before in this country.

For instance, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the guns of law-abiding citizens in the New Orleans area were confiscated. I don't think that the original intent was malicious, but the general outcome quickly became so. National Guardsmen and police quickly abused their authority in their man-handling of private citizens who had committed no crime.

And it's curious that this president would pompously wax philosophical on the AK-47 issue when his administration allowed over 2,000 of these guns to walk into criminal hands during the Fast and Furious operation, all in an effort to create the atmosphere the gun control lobby so desperately wants in order to enact additional gun control laws.

In a speech before the National Urban League in July, President Obama told his audience that he believes "that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. I think we recognize the tradition of gun ownership passed on from generation to generation, that hunting and shooting are a part of a cherished national heritage. But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals." He reiterated this sentiment in the second presidential debate in New York. His administration has pushed for a UN Gun Control Treaty, and unfortunately, is as clueless about weaponry as he is on foreign policy and embassy security.

In fact, the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution was not implemented in order that colonials could enjoy their hunting and skeet shooting. Far from it. The Second Amendment came about so that free men could constrain a government bent on tyranny. These Founders knew the heart of man, and they knew that even this Republic would go down the road of despotism eventually. Thomas Jefferson stated that "the tree of Liberty needs to be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

In fact, in 1788 Alexander Hamilton stated:

[I]f circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude[,] that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens.

Our Founders clearly understood the intent of the Second Amendment, and while I was gladdened to hear Governor Mitt Romney counter in the second debate that we had enough laws in place and that we needed to focus on enforcing those laws, not making new ones, I have to say that American and world history have shown that even the most benign government will soon turn to tyranny. It's a principle of entropy that is proven time and time again.

A people who insist on security to the detriment of liberty deserve neither liberty nor security, according to Benjamin Franklin. Our very own revolutionary war began over the issue of gun confiscation. In 1775, General Gage sent in 700 armed troops to Concord, Massachusetts to confiscate the weapons of the colonists. Seventy armed men stood fast and faced down the British army. It was the shot heard round the world.

We can never legislate ourselves into permanent security. Patriots must ever be on guard for those government intrusions designed to take away our basic rights. Just in the 20th century, history is replete with government confiscation of guns and the results of that confiscation.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians were rounded up and slaughtered.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents were rounded up and slaughtered.

In 1935, China established gun control. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents were rounded up and slaughtered.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews and others were exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956, and from 1975 to 1977 one million educated people were exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964, and from 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians were exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970 and from 1971 to 1979, 300,000 people were exterminated.

Estimates say that as high as 56 million people have been exterminated in the 20th century alone because gun control left them defenseless. Make no mistake, even with the Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia vs Heller stating that the Second Amendment protected an individual's right to possess a firearm unrelated to service in a militia, they also listed in dissenting opinions the many instances that the courts had ruled on prohibitions to firearm ownership as being well within the spirit of the Constitution. Should this president be re-elected, he will be appointing at minimum two court justices to the Supreme Court, and the danger to our liberty has never been more apparent.

But let's say they don't touch the guns. Let's say they just go after ammunition... oh wait, they've tried that in the past and the idea is rearing its ugly head not only in the UN Gun Control treaty, but from anti-gun legislators in Congress as well. Recent statistics prove that limiting ammunition will only affect law-abiding gun owners. Gary Kleck, a leading criminologist, states that in the average criminal endeavor where guns come into play, criminals fire an average of few if any shots. In altercations with police officers, criminals fire an average of 3.7 shots.

In contrast, top pistol, rifle, and competition shooters fire tens of thousands of rounds each year. Law-abiding citizens regularly buy ammunition in bulk for cost savings. This attempt at regulating ammunition sales only affects those citizens who responsibly maintain a weapon because criminals don't care what the law says.

And as guns and ammunition become a higher and more valuable commodity, you can bet this criminal element will do everything it can to relieve you of your legally possessed weapons and ammunition. A friend of mine once said that you could never make anything criminal proof because criminals could be so ingenuous.

I have to disagree... I think you can subvert that criminal element more so than you think. And it begins with a copy of Hide Your Guns: Off-Grid Survival Caches by Sam Adams.
