Canada's strongest earthquake in more than 60 years

 

Canada's strongest earthquake in more than 60 years has struck off British Columbia's coast. The magnitude 7.7 quake struck at 8:04 p.m. PT Saturday and was centered off Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands. It could be felt as far away as Edmonton and Yukon.

Residents near the center of the quake said the violent jolting from the initial tremor lasted for up to a minute - as of yet, no injuries or major damage have been reported.
 
 
 
This area is very close to the Cascadia Subduction Zone which has a history of mega-quakes measuring 9+ .... It is also predicted to have a 300 year cycle which means it's due any day. The last event occurred January 26th 1700 with a 9.2 mag. quake which sent a tsunami all the way to Japan killing thousands.
