Contaminated landfill no longer threat to residents, EPA says

A long-closed contaminated landfill in Londonderry, N.H., no longer poses a threat to residents, according to a local news report.

The U.S. EPA recently completed a review of remediation at the superfund site that's been closed since 1980, according to the Union Leader newspaper.

The landfill covers 180 acres and was used a town disposal site in the 1960s. About 12 acres are contaminated, the newspaper reported.

The EPA ordered most of the 570 residences within a one-mile radius of the site to receive municipal water instead of well water in 1987 as a result of the superfund designation, the Union Leader reported.

The EPA's report is available online.
