Enbridge ordered to do more spill cleanup in Michigan's Kalamazoo
River
New York (Platts)--3Oct2012/203 pm EDT/1803 GMT
Canadian pipeline owner Enbridge has been ordered to do another round
of cleanup work in Michigan's Kalamazoo River, more than two years after
the company's Line 6B spilled crude oil into the river, the US
Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday.
"EPA is proposing further action upstream of Ceresco Dam, upstream of
the Battle Creek Dam (Mill Ponds area), and in the delta upstream of
Morrow Lake," it said.
The agency said Enbridge has 10 days to request a conference to discuss
the additional work and 30 days to submit written comments.
Prior orders on cleanup and restoration in the river remain in
effect, EPA said.
Enbridge officials could not be reached for comment.
Federal pipeline safety officials in September officially closed the
2010 investigation into the spill in Marshall, Michigan, citing the
company with 24 violations and levying $3.69 million in penalties.
A total 20,000 barrels of oil -- a mix of light, medium and heavy crudes
-- spilled after a segment of Line 6B ruptured July 25, 2010.
