Spain: Presence of US Ships Will Anger Russia
Spain’s decision to host U.S. Navy ships capable of shooting down
ballistic missiles from Iran will strengthen NATO’s strategic position
in Europe and the greater Mediterranean, but will further aggravate its
already cool relations with Russia. While concerns have been raised
about the capabilities of the European missile shield, the agreement
will help Spain’s struggling economy and indicates Madrid’s continuing
strong ties to the United States and NATO despite the country’s domestic
problems.
